Matsumoto Ryojun 松本良順

Other names: タレ目のおじちゃん (droopy-eyed uncle), 法眼 (hougen - senior priestly rank in Buddhism)
Gender:
Position: the Shogun's Physician
First Appearance: Volume 15, Ch. 71

He is the Shogun's Physician and is a fellow colleague of Sei's deceased father. He is the one who administers the medical checkup for the Shinsengumi in volume 15.

Sei had first met Matsumoto when she was but a child (about 8 years old). One of the first thing that she blurted out of her mouth was "tareme" (drooping eyes), which was rather rude of her to do so. Ironically, the same thing happens again when they meet years later. This did not bode well, as it immediately gave her away as the daughter of his friend. Right then and there Matsumoto began to suspect of her true identity.

Luckily, Matsumoto ends up helping Sei by devising a lie and telling the Shinsengumi that she is inflicted with Nyoshinshen - a gender changing disease. This lie aids her greatly, and helps explain why her voice has not deepened, and why she remains so feminine-looking.

Matsumoto has openly asked Okita several times to take Sei as his bride, but unfortunately Okita has no intention of falling in love or starting a family. Matsumoto also takes no remorse in tricking Okita for Sei's benefit. Once he had told Okita that Sei had a terrible illness when in fact she was perfectly healthy. Then later, he pretended that Sei had died after she had been wounded. Needless to say, he gives Okita a lot of grief.
