Ch 74 Summary

Summary by Suika

Okita is horseback riding and frantically looking for Sei. He thinks back to Matsumoto's words, "I need to examine Kamiya Seizaburou as soon as possible to properly understand the illness" and starts wailing for her to come out. An embarrassed Sei appears, yelling at him to stop acting like someone weeping for a lost child. Okita is very relieved and tells her to get on the horse so they can return to the headquarters. Sei asks him if Matsumoto had departed; Okita looks at her uneasily and says yes. Sei happily hops on the horse, but soon notices that Okita's behavior is rather odd.

Back at headquarters, Sei realizes something... Matsumoto is still there, and now Okita is forcing her to go through the medical examination! Sei is angry that he lied to her again, but Okita tells her that either she goes through with it or get punished. She brazenly declares she would rather take the punishment instead.

Hearing this angers Okita and he slaps her. He then forcefully puts her over his shoulders, while ignoring her screams, "Put me down! You lied to me! You lied to me Okita-sensei!" He then dumps her in front of Matsumoto and leaves.

Sei and Matsumoto are left alone and do not speak. Suddenly, Matsumoto starts hollering at Okita, who apparently is still right outside the door to eavesdrop. Okita apologizes, and Matsumoto goes on to say something about "mice". No doubt that the mice he is referring to are Toudou, Harada, Nagakura, Nakamura, and Saitou -- who are also eavesdropping!

Back in the room, Matsumoto repeats a line he once said to 8 year old Sei. "Kintamu wa doko kara choutatsu shintano ka." Sei is dumbfounded and her expression confirms Matsumoto's suspicions: she really is his best friend's daughter! Sei takes out her sword, and puts it against her neck, ready to commit suicide. Matsumoto fakes pain, distracting Sei. Her sword flies out of her hand, and he pins her down. However, Sei kicks him in the crotch, and wrestles him. Now, the tables have turned, and she's the one with the upper hand. Sei pleads for him to not reveal her secret and cries. Matsumoto seems touched...

Elsewhere, a very worried Okita is anxiously fretting and praying. The others are also worried as well...

Sei starts to tell Matsumoto how she came to join the Shinsengumi... and Matsumoto even reveals to her how he had tricked Okita by telling the "baka" that "Kamiya has a bad illness (Kamiya ni warui yamai ga aru kamo)." Sei now understands Okita's actions. In the end, Matsumoto appears to have a plan cooked up.

Toudou comes in and announces everyone to report to Kondou's room to find out the results of Sei's examination, and Okita looks terror-stricken with worry. Harada assures him that "Kamiya will be absolutely alright!" Unfortunately that is not so as Matsumoto regretfully tells everyone, "Kamiya Seizaburou is inflicted with 'Nyoshinsen' [如心遷]." Hearing this, Okita looks as if he's about to break down...

Matsumoto then describes the disease as one that makes a male become female. Everyone is shocked, and Okita is confused since Sei IS a girl to begin with. Matsumoto gives him a wink (it's even written in English *lol*) and suddenly everything becomes clear.

Outside, Sei wonders if everything is going to be okay. She notices Okita running towards her, and to her shock, pulls her into a tight embrace. He cannot contain his happiness knowing that Sei is healthy and there was no "bad illness". There are tears in Sei's eyes and she blissfully smiles. She silently thanks her "tareme no ojichan."

Much later, Sei (still in a blissful state) asks if this incident had caused him worry. Okita tearfully (in a comical way) says "Yeah, I thought (you?) were going to die." (Or something like that, I'm not very sure)

Even later, we see Nakamura bawling on his futon (he had been eavesdropping and had heard everything). "So Kamiya is REALLY A MAN after all?!"
