Ch 127 Summary
Summary by Suika

Hijikata needs 500 Ryou within the next couple of days and orders the
Head of Accounting, Kawai Kisaburou, to present it to him soon.
Unfortunately for Kawai there is a deficient of 50 Ryou in the treasury,
apparently it's been stolen away. Only Kawai and Sei know about the missing
money, and Kawai has sent a letter home asking for money to replace the
funds. Sei wants to help Kawai and decides that she's going to secretly
hunt around for the thief and make him return the 50 Ryou.
Seeing her, Okita knows all too well that she's up to something and demands
to know what she's scheming. Sei only tells Okita with a cute little pout
that she’s of age so she's not going to tell him her secret (i.e. the
missing money). She runs off leaving a flustered Okita thinking how adorable
she is.
Note: The word she uses is 年頃 (toshigoro) which can mean marriageable age
(esp. of a woman); age of independence; age of adulthood
Unfortunately, Sei is unable to find the thief, and the money to replace
the missing funds have not yet arrived. Kawai tells Sei that he believes
in his father (who will send the money) and will wait. Sei says she believes
in him too and she will wait together with Kawai.
Okita happens to walk by this moment and only overhears the last end
of their conversation. He thinks back to what she had told him before,
that she won’t tell him her secret because she's of (marriageable) age...!
A downtrodden Okita goes to seek refuge in Hijikata's room and starts
to ask questions about Kawai. His thoughts idiotically wander off to a
9 year gap between Sei and Kawai; that he loves Hijikata but if he takes
a bride then Kondou would definitely be a better choice...
Okita then asks Hijikata what he thinks of Kawai, and Hijikata responds
that "Kawai is not a Bushi."
After leaving Hijikata’s room Okita spots Sei praying from afar. He watches
her wistfully, wondering what she is wishing for. Unbeknownst to him, the only
thing on her mind is the speedy delivery of the 50 Ryou.
Hijikata eventually finds out about the missing money and tells Kawai to prepare
to commit seppuku. The news reaches everyone in the Shinsengumi and many are
unhappy about it. Sei tries to plea for Kawai's innocence and that he didn't
embezzle the money, but Hijikata won't budge. Afterwards, Okita comes and hands
Hijikata a letter of signatures from the taishi (regimental soldiers) pleading
for the postponement of Kawai's judgment. He is infuriated to find Okita's name
first on the list, and while Hijikata is none too pleased about it, in the end
he gives Kawai 3 days.
Sei is estatic and thanks Okita. But he tells her that the idea was suggested
by Saitou and Sei compliments how "Aniue is so clever!" To his embarrassment
Okita also finds out he had completely misunderstood Sei's "secret" which was about the missing money and had nothing to do with marriage.
